PSA: Radiocomix, the people who S&tB is hosted with, is doing an Indigogo campaign to collect funds to stay in business, since their (ex-)accountant did an 'oops' that left them in the IRS's bad graces. If you'd like to contribute (and have the disposable income to do so), their page is here. Also, if you contribute and let me know, I will do a small B&W sketch for you in thanks. :3

So it looks like Amazon has rescinded the recall on M.C.A. Hogarth's Spots the Space Marine, yay! No official word from either Amazon or GW to Hogarth or in general afaik, but I'll update if that happens.

Also, I'm... kinda doing research for a short fic that I mmaaaaay submit to an anthology. It's kinda Lovecraft. As in, yes, Lovecraft. The thing is, I'm setting this probably in Damascus around 710 - 730 CE. And this is not my usual area or my usual timeframe.

Like I said, I'm doing research, and there are some things pinging me, but I was wondering if anyone has a general knowledge of the time/area and Muslim-Arab culture of that time. And if that is the case, would said person be interestead in betareading, both in general and for historical accuracy?

If you just want to do beta-reading for story, that's great too.

Because it sounds like a good idea, I'll keep replies related to beta-ing screened for if you'd like to volunteer anonymously. (At least I think I managed to screen comments - never done it before XD; )

Author M.C.A. Hogarth is under fire by Games Workshop(Warhammer). They got Amazon to pull the e-book version of her book, 'Spots the Space Marine,' which is in no way based on Warhammer 40K or anything else to do with Games Workshop. So why did GW target Hogarth? Because they're claiming trademark on 'space marine.'

Yes, you read that right.

Games Workship is actually trying to claim trademark on 'space marine' as a phrase in printed matter, as if it hasn't been in common sci-fi usage since, oh, the 1930's. Now, they do have a trademark on it when it comes to tabletop games, but books? Nu-uhn. (and really, even the tabletop RPG thing sounds a bit thin, considering that there was a game put out by another unrelated company called, yep, Space Marine, before, as I understand it, Games Workshop was even a gleam in anyone's eye)

If you follow sci-fi/fantasy news, chances are you've read about this somewhere today. The president of SFWA, John Scalzi, has a post about it here, and here's Hogarth's own LJ post.

Right, so, this is my stump and I'm using it. The House let the Violence Against Women Act lapse.

This means there will be less resources for abused women - less places to go, less people to turn to, less help for them in general. And the VAWA bill? Will have to start the approval process over from step one.

House Republicans have previously objected to inclusions of Native American women, immigrants, lesbians, and trans-women to the bill.

Saying that I am angry about this whole debacle is something of an understatement. If you can, please spread the word about this. If you have a teaspoon available to let your local politicians or media know that idiocy like this is not on, it would be much appreciated.

*checks date* Nope, it's not April Fools. Dangit.

&#*@%& - didn't we just go through this? As if SOPA/PIPA weren't bad enough, now it looks like they're trying to pull a fast one. And this time it might be global. *seethe*

The quick and dirty on ACTA.

The facts in summary, from EFF.org

The legalese

Worrisome Speculation from the Electronic Frontier Foundation:

"the same industry rightsholder groups that support the creation of ACTA have also called for mandatory network-level filtering by Internet Service Providers and for Internet Service Providers to terminate citizens' Internet connection on repeat allegation of copyright infringement (the "Three Strikes" /Graduated Response) so there is reason to believe that ACTA will seek to increase intermediary liability and require these things of Internet Service Providers. While mandating copyright filtering by ISPs will not be technologically effective because it can be defeated by use of encryption efforts to introduce network level filtering will likely involve deep packet inspection of citizens' Internet communications."

I was reading Yahoo! News and this caught my attention: USDA says it will close 259 offices to save $150M

Which, okay, saving money and all that. Although I'm somewhat perturbed by the fact that they're going to be closing "259 domestic offices, labs and other facilities"

Especially since "the savings will be relatively small in the context of the agency's $145 billion budget"

.....so what the heck are they doing with the rest of that money that's more importrant than the offices and labs? *eyes it dubiously*

I'm not really pro or con this right now, just... keeping an eye on it?
